Thermostatic Mixing Valves Testing

Have you done YOUR annual thermostatic mixing valves testing?

Thermostatic mixing valves testing is mandatory, and must be carried out by a qualified plumber on an annual basis. CRG Plumbing are the experts when it comes to helping you comply with TMV testing requirements in Campbelltown and Greater Sydney areas.

What is a thermostatic mixing valve?

A Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV) is a valve that blends hot water (stored at temperatures high enough to kill bacteria) with cold water to ensure constant, safe outlet temperatures preventing scalding. Commonly found in nursing homes, child care centres and disabled toilet blocks, fitted to showers and hand basins.

The TMV circulates and mixes hot and cold water and then distributes warm water at a temperature less than 50°C. They MUST be tested on a yearly basis.

Who needs TMV testing?

If your business is one of the below, you should have a TMV installed and have it annually test to ensure the safety of your staff and customers.

  • Early childhood centres
  • Primary and Secondary schools
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Shopping Centres
  • Facilities which house the young, aged, sick or disabled.

Thermostatic mixing valves must be tested and maintained yearly by a qualified TMV license holder like CRG Plumbing & Maintenance.

TMV Testing FAQs

A TMV test is a procedure we use to put the valve (TMV) through to a process to simulate a loss of flow of the one of the water supplies, and also a temperature test. It checks the components of the valve too.

To test a TMV valve, we isolate the hot water and then put the valve into a thermo shut down. After, we repeat this process with the cold side whilst recording the temperature of the water.

Thermostatic mixing valves must be tested by law every 12 months. Not to do so could result in serious consequences for the property owners.

To test a TMV in Australia, you must be a licenced plumber with thermostatic valve accreditation provided by state authorities in your jurisdiction. Plumbers such as CRG have the accreditation in order to test your equipment and provide a report.

You do not test a thermostatic shower valve, not to be confused with a thermostatic mixing valve. Thus, a mixer shower does not need to be tested, and in fact there are no tests for this type of shower.
